Career Guidance & Counselling

The Guidance and Counselling Department at Castlepollard Community College works closely with school staff and management, students and parents to provide a service to our students which will assist them in making informed choices and decisions about their life, education and future career.

Guidance and Counselling is available to all students during the year.  Priority is given to particular groups at certain times of the year.  Leaving Certificate students are timetabled as a group for one class period per week for Guidance.  All senior cycle students participate in the Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme which involves the preparation of a portfolio and includes the following modules:- diary of work experience,  a career investigation and recorded interview.

In addition, individual appointments are scheduled with all Leaving Certificate students to discuss career options and choices. Psychological assessments, including general ability, aptitude and interest assessments, are also available to help students in their career decision process.

Junior Certificate students can make individual appointments to discuss subject choices for the Leaving Certificate cycle.  For junior classes, emphasis is placed on helping students to cope with the transition from primary to post-primary.

In addition, students receive training in study skills, homework completion and time management skills.  Students who are experiencing personal difficulties are encouraged to meet with the Guidance Counsellor and/or other members of the Pastoral Care team.
